Following a successful pilot project and positive community feedback, the City of Fredericton’s Livable Community committee, comprised of members of City Council has directed staff to prepare by-law amendments that will make off-leash dog trails a permanent seasonal feature at Killarney Lake Park.
Killarney Lake Park is a popular shared use space within the city that offers a large variety of free recreation and leisure opportunities. The implementation of off-leash dog trails comes directly from feedback expressed by residents that as the city continues to grow, it’s important to provide space for dogs to play, explore, and socialize in a safe, natural environment.
Each year from May to November, just over six kilometers of off-leash trails will be available. Dogs must remain leashed throughout the park except when in designated off-leash areas. Off-leash trails will not be available during winter months to allow for seasonal use.
Providing select off-leash spaces is part of a series of upgrades planned for Killarney Lake Park under the city’s Recreation & Leisure Master Plan. Details about additional improvements to support year-round recreation in Killarney Lake Park are available on the city’s website.
