My street has been spray painted - what does that mean?
Spray paint can mean a variety of things depending on the colour. Here is a quick reference guide for spray paint.
- Pink denotes survey markings to show elevations and locations of survey points. You will typically see this in new developments and not on existing roads and sidewalks.
- White is used to mark the limits of excavation when we are replacing curb, sidewalk, or digging a road to replace below ground infrastructure. The line type is usually dashed.
- Yellow shows the location of an underground gas line.
- Blue paint will show the location of water lines underground. Manholes may also be marked with blue paint to show the location of water valves.
- Green is for sewer / sanitary lines that are also located below ground. Manholes that are marked with an SA in green stand for sanitary. Work crews may need to open these manholes for ongoing maintenance.
- Red shows the location of underground electrical lines.
- Orange denotes underground communication lines such cable and fiber optics.
It's recommended that before you dig you call a locate service to have any underground utilities identified. These will be marked with the above paint colours.
