Fredericton is one of Canada’s fastest-growing cities. As more people choose to make Fredericton their home, our transportation network must continue to keep pace by connecting people and places via safe, accessible and sustainable transportation options. The framework of highways, streets, sidewalks and trails that link all the different parts of the city together enables the movement of people, goods and services throughout the city and then on to rest of the province. No matter how you choose to get around, the design and efficiency of our transportation network affects everyone’s daily life.

The City is currently developing a new Transportation Study that will shape the way traffic is managed in the city for the next 10 years. Our engineers will consider current and projected traffic patterns to guide important infrastructure improvements such as the installation of traffic signals, roundabouts and bridges, as well as street, sidewalk and trail upgrades. The Study will also recommend improvements to encourage active transportation options such as biking and walking, as well as transit use.

As part of the Fredericton Transportation Study, a household travel survey* engaged households within the greater Fredericton region. A random selection of people were contacted by telephone or by text message in late 2023 and early 2024 and asked to provide details of each trip completed the day before along with demographic and household information. The survey was conducted to better understand how people travel within the Fredericton region, and the data will help inform the Study by helping to estimate future travel demand and prioritize future transportation infrastructure improvements within the City.

There will be other engagement opportunities coming in the New Year as work continues on the new Transportation Study. Stay tuned!
