Kicked out after asking for repairs

We lived in a two bedroom apartment in Lincoln Heights. Loved it there; close to work, trails, highway etc. However, over time we realized that as the average rent in Fredericton rose ours did not which fostered a slumlord approach when asking for repairs. It got to the point that we had a leak in our living room and master bedroom whenever it rained (for our entire three year tenancy) the soffit above our balcony had a huge hole in it which squirrels and yes raccoons took advantage of to access the roof to nest. The hallway coat closet door fell off the runner and the landlords solution was to just remove the door. The bathroom taps leaked the entire tenancy, the kitchen sink also leaked and eventually flooded the unit below us. We also had a terrible rodent problem in the building. It got to a point where I was emailing the office on a monthly basis asking for repairs to be done and then one day they just sent us a notice to vacate. They cited that three years ago when we first moved in we had put the apartment up on Airbnb but we hadn’t done it in years and they’ve never had any complaints.

We were fortunate enough to be able to buy a house when we were evicted but something needs to happen to help those who are not in such a fortunate position. When we first moved into the apartment the rent was cheaper than a mortgage, if we had moved into another apartment it would’ve been more expensive than the mortgage so it just didn’t make sense for us to continue renting.
