The City of Fredericton is in the process of updating both the Climate Change Adaptation Plan and the Community and Corporate Energy and Emissions Plans, originally adopted in 2020 and 2021, respectively. These updates are in response to jurisdictional changes, population growth, evolving climate science, and changing policy and funding landscapes.

The purpose of these updated plans is to:

  • Build on existing progress
  • Re-evaluate strategies for mitigating emissions and building adaptive capacity to match evolving changes in the City’s authority and capacity
  • Respond to challenges, needs, and priorities of the broader Fredericton community

How To Get Involved

Residents will have the opportunity to participate in the development of the Climate Adaptation and Mitigation Plans through a comprehensive questionnaire where you can provide your feedback and let us know what climate actions matter the most to you. Stay tuned for the questionnaire which will be launched in the new year.

Feedback gathered throughout the engagement process will be summarized in a "What We Learned" report and integrated into the final plans where appropriate.

Plan Development involves:

  • Data Collection: Compiling available data on local climate and weather patterns, hazards, greenhouse gas emissions, infrastructure and assets, land use, growth, transportation patterns and more.
  • Climate Risk and Vulnerability Assessment: Analyzing climate hazards, exposure, and vulnerability to determine the City's most significant climate risks.
  • Adaptation and Mitigation Modelling: Using the collected data to model future climate impacts under three scenarios to inform climate action priorities and decision-making.
    • Business-as-Usual (BAU): Baseline scenario assuming no additional climate action.
    • Business-as-Planned (BAP): Assumes existing adaptation and mitigation plans are successfully implemented.
    • Low-Carbon (LC): Assumes more ambitious emissions reductions and resilience-building measures are adopted.
  • Community Engagement: Gathering input from residents, businesses, organizations, and other stakeholders through advisory committee meetings and public engagement opportunities.
  • Strategy Development: Updating actions and priorities based on technical analysis of completed models and community feedback.
  • Action Planning: Establishing timelines, responsibilities, and performance measures to track progress on the implementation of recommended actions.
