City of Fredericton's Heritage Program and Services Review

The City has just released a one-year implementation plan to action the recommendations brought forward in the Heritage Program and Services Review.

With the robust implementation of these recommendations the City of Fredericton will be a heritage conservation leader known for protecting historically significant buildings and sites, and improving the quality of life for both current and future residents and visitors.

The plan, adopted by City Council in June and guided by a months long public engagement process, ensures that the overall character of Fredericton is maintained and enhanced as the city continues to grow and change.

The Heritage Program

The City of Fredericton has operated a municipal heritage service for many years. The Heritage and Urban Design Division is a one-person shop within the City's Planning and Development Department that:

• Administers By-law L-4, the City of Fredericton Heritage Preservation By-law over approximately 350 properties, consistent with New Brunswick's Heritage Conservation Act; and,
• Supports the function of the Preservation Review Board, a quasi-judicial body tasked with administering By-law L-4 and advising Council on heritage issues in a manner consistent with the By-law and Act.

The Heritage and Urban Design Division also provides other services, including:

• Support to have properties added to the Local Historic Places Register, a non-regulatory inventory of properties with historic value;
• Advisory services, including expert advice within the corporation and to the owners of heritage building stock; and,
• Although beyond the scope of this exercise, the Division also provides expertise in urban design and landscape architecture.
