With that growth comes both opportunities and challenges in neighbourhoods across our city. This includes the Urban Core, made up of three distinct areas: the City Centre, Main Street (North side), and the South Core. Secondary Municipal Plans for the City Centre and Main Street were completed in 2015 and 2016, but the current plan guiding a majority of the South Core (see Map above) titled the Residential Town Plat Area Plan was adopted over twenty years ago. While this plan has successfully balanced new development with the strong sense of community and residential character, a lot has changed. A new Growth Strategy and Municipal Plan envision a more urban, compact, and sustainable Fredericton. Significant residential and employment growth is projected to be accommodated throughout the Urban Core and the South Core plays a key role in achieving the goals outlined in both important documents. The City&#39;s 2017 Growth Strategy and 2020 Imagine Fredericton: Municipal Plan are the guiding documents that help dictate how the city develops as a whole, and envisions an urban, compact, and sustainable Fredericton. Significant residential and employment growth must be accommodated throughout the Urban Core and the South Core plays a key role in achieving the important goals of these plans. The City is now kicking off a new South Core Secondary Municipal Plan process that will re-examine how we grow while maintaining the neighbourhood&rsquo;s community character. This Plan will provide a framework to guide the ongoing evolution of the area. Over the course of the next year, the team will be exploring the conditions, features and attributes that make up the South Core, developing ideas for street design, land use, public space, new buildings, and preparing design guidelines and policies to provide direction for change. Public engagement for the South Core Secondary Municipal Plan will be organized around three South Core Design Studios during which there will be many ways to share your thoughts from one on one meetings to large group presentations. See the engagement diagram in our FAQ section for all the tools we will be using to connect with community members interested in participating. Even if you&rsquo;re not directly within the boundaries of the area, we welcome your input!The first South Core Design Studio is planned for May 6th and 7th in the Boyce Farmer&rsquo;s Market. The Design Studio is an opportunity for engaging discussions and workshops where people can provide input on ideas as they emerge. The agenda includes a sequence of team working sessions, meetings with city staff, one-on-one discussions with stakeholders and events for the community to come and share their thoughts. The focus of the first Design Studio is to develop a vision statement and fundamental design principles that will underpin the South Core Secondary Municipal Plan. The public engagement opportunities include the following events:Monday, May 6th:<ul><li>Attend the Kick-Off Presentation at 6:30pm, where our expert planning and design professionals will talk about the role of streets, parks, urban design, and heritage in creating a sense of place and defining the character of the South Core. </li><li>The presentation will immediately be followed by a workshop-style session where, as an attendee, you will work with others to share thoughts on words and phrases that should be captured in an overarching vision statement and guiding principles for the future document. It will be a time to reflect, discuss, ask questions, and be creative!</li><li>Please register for this event <a href="https://www.eventbrite.ca/e/south-core-secondary-municipal-plan-kick-off-presentation-workshop-tickets-880862031047?aff=oddtdtcreator)" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">here</a> to help us accommodate all those who wish to attend. Light refreshments and child-minding will be provided.</li></ul>Tuesday, May 7th<ul><li>Whether or not you were able to attend the previous session, everyone is welcome to drop in to this open house beginning at 6:00pm to review the team&rsquo;s work in process and the collected public input. Our goal is to further our understanding of the elements and attributes that define the character of the South Core, and overall, this event is another opportunity to speak with our team about the community and this planning process. South Core Secondary Municipal Plan

Trees are an integral part of the ecosystem within which our growing City lives. The urban forest cools the City, cleans the air that we breathe, reduces rainwater runoff, and improves our mental and physical health.Our changing climate has become a stress on some species such as birch, while other species like ash are fighting invasive forest pests and pathogens. Elms within the City have been living with Dutch elm disease since the 1960s and the emerald ash borer has been a threat since at least 2021.Fredericton is growing quickly, and we have the opportunity to plan ahead to strategically preserve trees, and plant and grow new trees in a diverse, resistant, and heathy urban forest. Fredericton's Urban Forest Strategy

The City of Fredericton is developing a new Recreation and Leisure Master Plan! The Plan will assist the City in guiding and managing the direction of recreation and leisure services, program, events, facilities, parks, open spaces, and other recreation amenities. The Plan will provide clear direction to City Council and staff regarding the use, development, redevelopment, enhancement, and/or delivery of recreation facilities, programs, and services.This new Recreation and Leisure Master Plan will build on an earlier one approved by City Council in 2009 by continuing to guide investment decisions, set priorities and maintain best practices in the delivery of recreation services and the operation of the City&rsquo;s diverse recreation assets. Most of the recommendations in the earlier Master Plan have been approved, and new initiatives have begun.The City has commissioned Sierra Planning and Management - a multi-disciplinary planning firm, in association with CBCL Limited and Novita Interpares, to develop the Master Plan to ensure recreation and leisure services are fully aligned with all community needs as the City grows and opportunities broaden. The Plan will balance needs, opportunities, and fiscal capacity to deliver a consensus driven vision for the next 15 years.Get Involved! The Recreation and Leisure Master Plan for Fredericton must reflect the needs and priorities of residents and will be developed through extensive community engagement. Over the course of the project, the consulting team will engage a range of sector stakeholders (community groups, public, private, not-for-profit), as well as the general public in identifying current needs, issues, and priorities as they relate to developing recreational opportunities in the City.We kicked things off with a Public Workshop on Tuesday, November 21 at the Fredericton Convention Centre. More than 100 people came out to share their experience, ideas and insights.
