    Idea:

Similar to Halifax's downtown beer garden in the summer. Could also have live music, food trucks, etc. Would bring more tourism over the bridge and onto the Northside.

    Staff Feedback:

Great idea for Atlantic Canada’s Brewing Capital! We already have several tasting experiences along the water on both sides of the river, including one that’s a stones throw from the Northside green.

  • Restore city waterfront riparian areas

Share Restore city waterfront riparian areas on Facebook Share Restore city waterfront riparian areas on Twitter Share Restore city waterfront riparian areas on Linkedin Email Restore city waterfront riparian areas link

    Idea:

Look into how to naturalize the area near the river. Take pride in adding environmentally significant fixes to the area. Currently there are boulders protecting the shoreline from erosion and the grass is mowed right to the edge. Appropriate vegetation can be added on the slope down to the water. Shrubs can also be added on the banks. Plants can be added without blocking out the view of the river.

    Staff Feedback:
Thanks so much for sharing your Big Idea with us! We shared your thoughts with the City's Environmental Strategist. In terms of what's already been happening: The City has identified restoration of the riparian area along Carleton Park as a key component in the Park plan and will be moving forward with the design and earth work in the coming years. The City works together with the Nashwaak Watershed Association on riparian planting and restoration on two large properties in the lower Nashwaak. City staff also also works with private landowners on similar projects when opportunities arise.

Saw this in a trip to Montreal years back and it was so cool to see different paintings instead of concrete!

Thanks for your Big Idea! We've shared it with the City's Arts and Culture Advisory Committee, which advises City Council on matters related to public art among other things. Thanks again!

    Staff Feedback:

We also think this would make a great connection for the area! Council has directed staff to start a detailed study of the Skyline Acres pedestrian connection. The objective is to determine if it can be done and how much the project would cost. Thank you for your input with regards to sidewalk clearing. It has been a challenging year and we continue to try to make our facilities as safe as possible for residents.

Note: In the past few days, we have received many Big Ideas regarding a new regional pool for the Fredericton area. Rather than answer them all individually, we are providing feedback in one place so it's easier for those who submitted an Idea on this theme to find it.

    Staff Feedback:

Thank you for your interest in a regional pool for the Fredericton area, which continues to be an important and the City is pleased to be a partner in the process. As you may know, the Greater Fredericton Region Aquatics Facility Feasibility Study has been received. The report is available on the website for the Regional Service Commission for the Fredericton Region. Here is the link.

Since that report was received, it has also been announced that the UNB Sir Max Aitken Pool will remain open until September 2023. That is good news for swimmers from the region.

At this point in time, all parties are working to determine the governance model to keep moving the project forward.

Thanks again for taking the time to reach out.

    Idea:

    More family-friendly places to go.

    Staff Feedback:

Thanks for providing your feedback to our Big Ideas question! Recreation staff are always looking for new and exciting family friendly programs and offerings to explore and implement within our parks and recreational facilities. This year, in addition to offering public skating within our indoor municipal arenas and at our many neighbourhood outdoor ice surfaces, a new family friendly skating loop was created in Carleton Park that was very popular. Use of the municipal trail system and snowshoeing also continued to be very popular activities with families this winter - with free access to equipment available through a City partnership with the Fredericton Public Library. Aquatic wise, a wide variety of family swim offerings are now available at the Fredericton Indoor Pool, with many more locations and program options soon to be available this summer at our outdoor pools and at Killarney Lake. In addition, as warmer weather arrives, you will soon see basketball, tennis and pickleball nets being installed at our many outdoor sport courts as well as the opening of our four municipal outdoor skateparks and Northside Youth Center (located at Willie O’Ree Place).

    Idea:

There are enough dogs in the downtown to require a convenient location. Designate an area of Queen Square or one of the baseball diamonds as an area certain hours of the day. Add a water spigot or fountain.

    Staff Feedback:

Hi Bill! Thanks for this. You're right: Lots of dogs in the downtown. While there are currently no plans to build this type of facility in the immediate future, we’ve shared your thoughts with staff and they will add it to their list of ideas to consider.
